Brexit and Scotland, what’s happening?

Brexit, a portmanteau of “British” and «exit», is known as the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union. Brexit comes as a result of the referendum held 23 of June 2016, within this referendum England voted for Brexit by 53% for to 46.6% against, Wales with 52.5% for to 47.5% against, but Scotland and Northern Ireland differed.^[1] Both Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to remain in the EU. But regardless, the UK government plans to invoke Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union by the end of March 2017, with this, officially starting the formal EU withdrawing procedure. The UK remains a full member of the EU until the terms of the withdrawal have been negotiated, estimated point of leave is March 2019.^[2] So what will be the consequences for Scotland as a minority and how will the voting differences between the nations impact the future of the UK, more specifically Scotland? That is what will look into in this article.

The once strong ties that unified the UK has long been divvying. Some time ago Ireland decided the UK`s course of political action, and today we find that Scotland threatens the fragile unity left between the countries of the UK. Scottish independence has long been an important debate and it pre dates Brexit by far. England and Wales voted for the withdrawal from the EU, but Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to remain. Which consequences does this split have?

Scotland wants out. Or at least a second independence referendum has been put on the table. Scotland’s First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, said in the aftermath of the Brexit referendum that the fact that Scotland is to leave the EU even though they voted to stay is “democratically unacceptable” and that “it seems like Westminster Tory Government now think they can do anything to Scotland and get away with it”^[1]. But on the other hand, we find that eurosceptism is alive and well in Scotland, even though they voted to stay in the EU. Nicola also stated that her ultimate goal, independence, could be “put on hold” if a “soft Brexit” were pursued, which now  seems to be set aside for a harder one. The worst case scenario for Nicola would be the UK abandoning EU`s single market, which now seems like a rather high possibilty. The SNP (Scottish National Party) reopened for the possibility of a second vote on Scottish independence, however in the 2017 Westminster elections they lost a total of 21 seats. This and many other factors has forced a divide in the Scottish government. Lets look at some of the biggest issues they are facing.

New scientific reaserch has found that Scotland could be facing a constitutional crisis over the brexit bill, with an estimated total of 16 billion pounds a year, which is more than 10% of the Scottish GDP. This comes to a total at 2, 263 pounds per head for the schottish people if the worst case scenario is set in motion.

Why create new problems when you have enough already?

The conflict between the UK, more specifically Northern Ireland, and the republic state of Ireland has been a long, dreadful and violent ongoing disagreement for several centuries, dating as far back as to Henry the 8ths rule. However, in the last 20 years, there has been peace between the two unions, accommodated by the “good Friday treaty” of 1998. So why is it that approximately half of the population in Northern Ireland wants to recreate the old feud by staying in the sating that they will need a hard border when they leave the EU in 2019? and why does England support these 48 something percentage of the population and not the majority ? And when they first choose to support this fraction, they show little to no ability to compromise on the terms of the land border. It will affect the citizens of Northern Ireland and Ireland the most and that is why i do not understand englands choice. It has andwill stir up unpleasant memories and might be the beginning of a new civil war.

“Black lives matter”

The “black lives matter” global network is seen upon as one of the biggest movements for racial equality in the 21st scentury. The movement was founded by three black activists; Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi. Back in 2013, the George Zimmerman case was the one that started it all with the black lives matter movement being a response to the injustice that was served in this acquittal.

The movment started out as black-centered political will and movement building project called #BlackLivesMatter. Back then it was mainly about justice for black people in incidentnts related to unprovoked police violence against them. However, the movement har grown outragously since then, and today it an organization  that promotes the support of all black lives in every aspect of life.

The importance of knowledge

A lot of people are interested in what came previous to our generation’s existence, but most people think that our history is boring, especially History class. Students are prone to boredom and to finding things difficult. History class is a class that informs us of how we got to where we are in the society today – how the human race built cities, formed languages, went from hunting for their life to simply going to the closest store and so on. However important our history is, there is a lot of it. Meaning that everything can’t be interesting. Students get excited by the opportunity to watch a movie, not reading or sitting through a lecture. Even though the material is interesting most students will not be thrilled to read about it in a book and that is perhaps why people find the class so difficult. Because it demands reading.

Although it seems boring, it is obvious to many of us how relevant it is to our existence. But, some students, like I, are unable to see how it will come to use in our adult day-to-day lifestyle (depending on what you are going to pursue as a career in the future).

The way we are taught History in Norway today makes us unaware of how we will be able to use it in our future. We need a teaching system that gets us eager to learn and invokes our need for it. Or at least understand why. We receive large amounts of intricate information over short timespan and it doesn’t allow us to absorb it all. Yes, we are taught History from a young age, but what our teacher spoke about when we were younger is simple and doesn’t really give us the foundation we need to process the material in High School.

 

How to uncover fake news:

 

1. Don’t trust the headlines, be skeptical.

Fake news has the tendency to draw the reader in by creating “screaming”, “interesting” and/or “catchy” headlines with capital letters and exclamation point at the end to catch the reader’s attention. If the headlines indulge in bizarre allegations or claims that seem too good or bad or just fictional to be true, they usually are.

 

2.  Take a closer look at the URL.

A counterfeit or copied URL can and should be a “red flag” on fake news. Many websites that posts and produce fake news imitates more authentic and credible news sites by doing small amendments to the URL. To avoid getting fooled by this, one can go to the websites and compare that URL to the URL of a more reliable source.

 

3. Research the source.

Ensure that the news is written off of a reliable source and who has a resume of being of being so. If the news is published by an unknown organization, you should look at their “About Us” page to find out more.

 

4. Look out for irregular formatting.

Many websites that produce fake news contain spelling errors and/or irregular layouts. If the website you are receiving the news from check these boxes, you should be skeptical of their content.

 

5. Judge the pictures.

Fake news often uses manipulated pictures or videos. Sometimes the pictures are real but used in another context. However, you can use a search engine to find the origin of the photo or video.

 

6. Control the dates.

Fake news often contains timelines that don’t make sense or dates that have been manipulated.

 

7. Check the facts.

Make sure to research the writer’s sources to confirm that they are correct. If the article/news are missing evidence or refrains from listing experts, it could be mean it is fake news.

 

8. Look at other reports

If there are no other sources reporting the news, it might be a sign of fake news.  If there are multiple trustworthy sources who are reporting the same news, it’s more lightly to be true.

 

9. Is the news a joke?

Sometimes it can be hard to separate between fake news and humor or satire. See if the source is known for humoristic parodies and if the details in the news seem like it’s meant as a joke.

 

10. Some news are made fake on purpose

Be critical with the news you read, and do only share the trustworthy news.

 

Donald Trump

Donald Trump is one of the most seen and heard, aka influential, people in the world as of today. With this much power comes responsibility for, not just for himself and his actions, but for his people, and also respect for his job. These are two assets he seems to neglect in every aspect of his work. This, and the fact that, and here I quote Michael Hayden; “ He just doesn’t have an interest in the world,” is what I find the most disturbing about Trump. When your job is to run an empire like The United States of America, it is your duty to not make statements or claims from the top of your head just because you want to or feel the need to say something. Donald Trump has got a severe case of mouth diarrhea, however, if he’d actually known anything about the world history it wouldn’t be this big of an issue.

Donald Trump did in April claim that Korea “used to be a part of China”, which I know is not true, Korea has never been a part of China. I also know that nobody pays the US for NATO, so when the president stated that Germany owed “vast sums” to the US for nato, I knew that was false. I know the difference between Napoleon III and Napoleon Bonaparte, and so should the President do. Another thing the President and his crew have mistaken is misspelling important guests name, position or country. This is a really unprofessional trait, which only helps decrease the amount of respect the white house receives from all over the world.  I find it shocking that high school students at the age of eighteen know more historical facts than the President of the United States. Many of the correct answers to these false accusations could be put into the category “common knowledge”. I for one believe a person in the position of the President of the United state should contain enough knowledge to cover such an easy field. Sometimes it seems like he’s just guessing or making up statements by whatever mood he’s in.

I mean don’t get me wrong, he probably knows more than us about some aspects of life, for example how to get an audience to listen to you and how to speak in a way that makes everything he is saying sounds like the truth or the right solution. This is a personal trait he has perfected, and if he’d only learn the facts and history around the topics he chooses to comment on, he would most likely be taken more seriously in the important conversations that his job acquires him to take part in. What is so sad is that he has all the facts available to him through the people he is surrounded by, and chooses not care enough about it to use these “tools”. By doing so he offends the presidents that came before him, he offends other nations. He offends the previous generations, and he offends the world history and those who actually know it. To know the world history and actively choose not to repeat it is the only way to make progress, and it seems like Trump definitely is not a fan of a progressive society. He does not see the point in knowing about past mistakes, and he does not learn from his own either. It is a crime against the world that a president should not be allowed to make. But then again he did not become president on his own and I know that it agitates a “tremendous” – to use one of his most common words against him, amount of the worlds’ population, especially Americans, that they have unleashed such a careless force as their public spokesperson, and governing face.

Every human being has the right to say their opinion and tell their truth. However, since Trump represents more than just himself everytime he speaks, i hope he sooner rather than later understands that this is not working. That he has to change before his people and the rest of the world will feel the wrath of his dependable mistakes.

 

13 CLIMATE ACTION

The global goal climate action concerns climate change. Climate change is seen as one of the main reasons for the two hurricanes Harvey and Irma. What are the main causes for climate change? Can we as individuals do anything to combat climate change?

 

According to Global Goals the global emissions of CO2 have increased by more than 46% since 1990. In order to secure the future generations a life without having to worry about climate crisis we have to do something now, before it is too late. The global issues might seem too complex and big for you as an individual to have a chance in saving the world. But you can’t just point towards the big businesses and blame them for all of our environmental woes, because you, yes you, can actually do something to make the world a better place. And that is important to understand. It is like a puzzle, the more we all do our part, the faster we will create an entire ecology of living that promotes sustainability. Something is better than nothing. Being environmentally friendly simply means having a lifestyle that are better for the environment. Here are some easy and small changes you can make in your everyday life to help live a more eco-friendly lifestyle:

 

1. Eat less meat: especially red meat.
2. Use less paper and recycle more
3. Only boil the water you need
4. Use canvas bags instead of plastic
5. Start a compost pile or bin
6. Purchase the right light bulb and turn off the lights
7. Choose cloth over paper
8. Shower less
9. Take the bus instead of the car, or even better get a bike
10. Buy locally grown products
11. Throw less food and stuff
12. Buy second hand

 

“If the bee disappeared off the face of the Earth, man would only have four years left to live,” Einstein supposedly said. Bees are very interesting as the food ecosystem heavily rely on them. It is a huge cause of concern that the number of bees are declining, as if they disappear other animals will struggle with surviving and it will have massive consequences for the ecosystem. Think about the bees and make an garden bee-friendly place with plants such as lavender, roses and sunflowers. It can be as easy as that.

The temperature of the earth is rising at almost twice the rate it was 50 years ago. One of the reasons for this is the emission of greenhouse gases. There are several greenhouse gases responsible for global warming, the most important one is CO2, although others are methane, from agriculture and landfills, nitrous oxide from fertilizers and the loss of forests that would be able to store the CO2. CO2 is responsible for 64% of the man-made global warming. This means that by reducing our carbon dioxide emissions we can reduce the dramatic changes global warming and climate change do. However, methane traps more heat than carbon dioxide per molecule, in fact 20 times more heat per molecule. Methane is responsible for 17% of man-made global warming. The causes for the rise of emissions of greenhouse gases are burning coal, gas and oil. China is ranked as number one when it comes to emission of greenhouse gases, currently producing more than 25% of all greenhouse gases. The United States follow, with 13.9%, with India placed third emitting 6.43% of all greenhouse gases. Norway is responsible for 0.1% of all greenhouse gas emissions. Deforestation is also an important cause, because trees help to regulate the climate by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Since trees contain a lot of carbon dioxide, emissions of carbon dioxide will rise when burning trees. When cutting trees down emissions will also rise, because the carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere.

 

We as individuals can do a lot to make the world a “greener” place and stray away from the polluting path we are on. Recycling is an easy and efficient way to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions and pollution in general. Through recycling we can decrease the amount of waste which has a huge impact on the natural environment. Recycling helps us reduce the amount of chemicals and greenhouse gasses released by trash in landfill sites reducing deforestation. With recycling we can help prevent our habitats destruction and decrease the effect of global warming, which are some of the few effects caused by deforestation.

 

Another take on the situation is to try and make bigger changes by affecting our government, and by doing so, our country could lead the revolution on climate change. Even though we are considered the best country in the world on almost all aspects surrounding the global environment development, we still have a lot of flaws, especially in the consume and waste department. That is why, on the lowest level we need to vote MDG at our election, and then MDG has to convince the other parties of the government to step up and start investing in our sustainable ecofriendly natural resources, and hopefully the rest of the world will follow. This will also be a much more affordable option for us as a country in the long haul, even though it might cost us some of our precious oil money right now for the research of how to develope it. There is no point in being one of the wealthiest countries in the world if our planet is trying to destroy us with natural catastrophes and disasters, because we choose not to take care of it.

Fake news are a fast growing industry and the expanding of this market is critical for everyone. Therefore, as we live in this pressing time where a vast part of the population blindly trusts in this thing we call the internet, it is crucial for our future knowledge and survival that we are censorious to the news we read and the sources they come from.

The expanding of the sex market, what are the consequences?

The sex market has, as well as all other markets around the world, developed and changed a tremendous amount during the last 10-20 years. The biggest change being the way it is distributed, and the increasing amount of production of both pornography and merchandise due to the amazing discovery, the world wide web (the internet or WIFI as it is called today). It is actually through this platform that the sex market flourished and has began to thrive. However, the internet has also caused a negative side to the sex industry. The bigger an industry becomes, the more “employees” are needed and wanted. This is a problem because even though it might provide money for more people and big porn distributers and gigolos, it does open the society up to a maybe too liberal view on what sex really is about and how we can treat people who are sex workers. And this has affected the public as well. This expansion and openness of the sex market has caused our culture around sex to change.

 

Let’s be honest, everyone has watched or watch porn regularly, and it is suddenly expected in most of the western societies to be open and general about ones’ sex life and experiences, ass well as it is expected that you never feel like anyone has done you injustice by asking about or suggesting sexual encounters. The fil industry doesn’t exactly help with producing high demand films like the fifty shades series, which only makes the S&M market blow through the roof, and creating an environment where filming abusive sex scenes is something an actor will have to accept inn order to “make it”. This sets and example for young girls and boys that there isn’t actually that big of a difference between working in the sex industry and working in the film industry, as well as bringing to the table that abusive methods of sex is suddenly okay.

Feedback from class week 35

So today in class we did som exercies for building trust and confindence inside our english group. I thought that was a good idea because i feel we are a somewhat quiet and shy class, exept for me of course. I thought the exercises were good, thoug we only scratched the surface when it comes to getting the other sudents to talk, raise tehir hands and participate because when we came back to the classroom the athmosphere had changed back to nervous, quiet and stiff, just like the first day. I think we need to work more in groups, and that Dave should to make us only speak english in class.

My expectations for the day was fulfilled except i really like watching  videos and discussing out loud woth the entire class afterwords, which we have not done yet because the calss does not participate enough yet, because we are still insecure aruond each other.

My emotions during the exercises where;

• Uncomfortable, When we had to walk into eacho other with our eyes closed and suddenly some one stepped on my feet or i bumped in to someone i dont know.
• Happy, when we were doing the tangly thing (knutemor) as it ia called in norwegian.
• Curious. Always curious about the new exercises.
• Afraid, especially when we did the exercise where i was falling rowards and backwords into Daniel and Mari’s arms.
• Awkward, when i was holding hands with someone i didn’t know and our palms started sweatting.

I felt these emotions because i don’t know the people in my class very well yet, and also because i am a very comfortable and confident person, but not in this setting. By that i mean that i dont like to go out of my comfortsone. Like, i have no problem being the loud and annoying kid in class that everybody has a love/hate relationship with or to, but when I comes to interracting with everybody on a more personal, detaled and less general level or way I can some times feel both awkward, afraid or uncomfortable as well as happy, excited and curious at the same time.

today i learned to know my calssmates a little better, and i got this better “view” of how our lessons are going to be.

 

Fieldtrip to Asker International School

On Thuesday 31st of May my calss and i where so lucky to get to visit Asker International School. The school includes all the grades form first to seventh, and therfore it is an elementary school. We got to know first, second and fifth grade the best, because that’s whom we spen the most time with and worked with through different activities.

We started the day off by recieving a little lecture from Mr. Mark, in how to behave and speak around the children. He made us aware of how different the language we use when we speak to others our age is compared to how we were going to speak to the children. I thought it was good that he mentioned this part due to the fact that i know we can use a rough and not a very sofisticated language, which itsn’t approperiate around small children.

For the first part of the day we where introdused to reading with the first and second graders , which for me was a very enlightening experience. I would never have though that do such an exercise would give me so much joy. I honestly don’t remember tha last time i felt so happy and important, and useful and just lucky to be given the oppertunity to do something for someone else.I was so surprised by how giving it was, and how good the children where both to us and academically.  In that moment i felt like i was a part of something greater, i thought; This job must be so  giving on a daily basis, and that if i ever was presented with the opportunity to teach, play og help younger children i would take it.

After reading with the first and second graders, the fifth graders  showed us a dance. The music didn’t work as planned in the commonroom so we had to move into the P.E. room, but when the thecnical errors where removed, they really shined like stars on the dancefloor! i was very impressed, and it was a good initiation to what came next. BAcause that was their version of a “in depth project”. I was profoundly amused and impressed by their presentations and work beforehand. I have to addmit that it was amazing to watch and ask questions and just listen to how dedicated they where to their projects.

We ended the day stationed on different posts spread around throughout the school yard, where every grade in the school participated in the different games. Our job varied form which teacher stood on the post, but for me it mostly consisted of getting to know the participants and helping them with their game tactics.

All in all it was an amusing day where i learned many things, incluing how giving it is to work with children (in my case small), and how much joy it brings to ones life. Though I saw that it could be demanding at times for the regular teachers, so i think i would preferre to be a sub rather then a regular teacher in a place like that.
